RECLAIM THE NIGHT BRIGHTON IS BACK! COME WALK, ROLL, SKATE, DANCE AND CHANT DOWN THE STREETS OF BRIGHTON TO REMIND THIS CITY THAT WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO WALK SAFELY AT NIGHT.
Last year over 500 people came together to take a stand against gender based violence. Join us again to reclaim the night in Brighton. Show those who would deny us the right to walk the streets without fear that they are not welcome in our city. We won’t go away until we win. Are you with us?
THE MARCH Reclaim the Night Brighton is open to people of all genders. Our march is trans* inclusive and we welcome those working in the sex industry to join us in the fight for safer streets. Families are also welcome. A buddy system will be in place for those who don’t want to walk alone. We’ll be starting at Brighton train station and ending at the rally point. For those who think they’ll be marching at a slower pace there will be the option of space at the front of the march.
THE RALLY The march will be followed by a rally, which will be held in a fully accessible venue. We are working on a fantastic and inspiring line up of speakers and entertainment (further details to be announced). Please note that no alcohol is allowed inside the rally venue.
THE AFTER PARTY We very exited to announce that this year Traumfrau are hosting our Reclaim the Night after party! Join us at Latest Music Bar to dance the night away. Please note this event is for over 18’s only. More details to be announced. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find a fully accessible venue for the after party. The first floor of this venue will be wheelchair accessible, but there are no accessible toilets.
GET INVOLVED If you’d like to get involved in organising or stewarding Reclaim the Night Brighton you can post a message on Facebook, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or come along to one of our meetings! “Of the world’s 100 largest economies, half are corporations. Walmart is bigger than Greece; Philip Morris is larger than Chile; Chrysler and Nestle are about the same size as Pakistan and Hungary, respectively. The six largest corporations in the world have revenues greater than the 30 countries containing half of the world’s population.”—
“If we are merely matter intricately assembled, is this really demeaning? If there’s nothing here but atoms, does that make us less or does that make matter more?”—Carl Sagan, The Varieties of Scientific Experience: A Personal View of the Search for God (via currentsinbiology)
“There is a strange double standard for lines of work that involve sex and sexuality, particularly when women are involved. Crab fishing, for example, is far more physically dangerous than acting in violent pornography, and that industry is plagued by many of the same problems as sex work, including exploitation of workers and human trafficking. But when men work in a risky field, we applaud their bravery and immortalize them on reality TV (where no one seems to worry whether they’re being reduced into distorted stereotypes of masculine physicality). When adult women choose to work in pornography, prostitution, or other forms of sex work, meanwhile, we turn them into pet political projects and coo with sympathy that they didn’t really choose their work. The hypocrisy underlines our profound social discomfort with female sexual agency, and our constant impulse to automatically paint women as passive victims of circumstances beyond their control. Men are always “brave,” and congratulated for their physical choices; women are always “victims,” and told that their physical choices didn’t count.”—Jillian Keenan, "Should Rape Porn Be Banned?"
